Goalscoring Goalkeepers

Whether arriving for a last-minute corner or slotting home a penalty, below we've put together a list of goalscoring goalkeepers that have made history by getting on the score sheet

Alan Fettis, Hull City / Date of Birth: 01/02/1971 / Height 6' 1"

Alan FettisIn the 1994/95 season current Third Division high-flyers, Hull City were going through something of an injury crisis.

During a home game against Oxford United on December 17th 1994, manager Terry Dolan named second-choice goalkeeper Alan Fettis as one of his outfield substitues. With Hull leading 2-1, Alan made his entrance from the bench and within minutes had extended Hull's lead and secured all three points.

One goal wasn't enough for Alan. In the season's final match Terry Dolan handed Alan Fettis the No. 8 shirt for an away trip to Blackpool. With the match poised at 1-1 and the game entering its final minute, up popped Super Alan Fettis to net the winner.

Alex Stepney, Manchester United / Date of Birth: 18/09/1942 / Height 183cm

Alex StepneyCan you believe halfway through the 1973-74 season Manchester United's joint leading scorer was their goalkeeper Alex Stepney ?

Admittedly he only had two goals to his name, both penalties, but by Boxing Day he shared the top of the Red Devil's goal scoring charts with United legends Lou Macari, George Best and Brian Kidd.

Earlier in the season, regular spot kick expert Willie Morgan got injured, United boss Tommy Docherty offered the job to Alex after he had scored on a pre-season tour.

His first chance fell at home to Leicester in September and he neatly tucked the ball away. United went on to lose 1-2, but it would not be long before Stepney tried his luck.

At home to Birmingham on October 20th he placed the ball wide of City keeper Mike Kelly to give Manchester United a 1-0 victory. They finished 21st that season and were relegated, but for goalkeeper Alex, happier memories were at the other end of the pitch.

Tony Roberts, Dagenham & Redbridge/ Date of Birth: 04/08/1969

Tony RobertsFormer QPR and Welsh No.1 Tony Roberts made history when he became the first ever goalkeeper to score from open play in the FA Cup.

In a fourth qualifying round tie away to Basingstoke in 2001, Tony, playing for Dagenham & Redbridge, who were trailing 2-1, ventured forward in the fourth minute of injury time.

Jason Broom swung over the corner as home keeper Scott Tarr failed to clear there was the Welshman to pounce on the loose ball and force it home.

Manager Garry Hill later admitted: "It was simply unbelievable." The Daggers comfortably won the replay 3-0 and progressed as far as the Third Round proper where they eventually lost to Charlton in a replay at home, after a creditable 1-1 draw at The Valley.

Mart Poom, Sunderland / Date of Birth: 02/03/1972 / Height 196cm

Mart PoomFor Four and a half years Mart Poom was a legend at Derby County. Sadly in November 2002, with The Rams deep in debt and in Division One he was sold to Sunderland, themselves near the foot of the Premiership.

Mart returned to Pride Park last September, for the first time since his transfer to Wearside, and what a return! With his old club leading 1-0 and the clock ticking down added time, big Mart crept forward for a last-gasp Sunderland corner.

As the ball came over, he arrived unnoticed with a late run to the far post and connected with Sean Thornton's corner. The ball thundered into the net and Poom wheeled away in celebration.

At the end of the game he received a standing ovation from both sets of fans and threw his gloves to the Derby faithful.

Paul Robinson, Leeds United / Date of Birth: 15/10/1979 / Height 193cm

Paul RobinsonJust like when you wait 30 minutes for a bus and two come along, it was only a matter of days before another keeper ventured forward in dramatic circumstances.

Under pressure Leeds were two goals down at home to Swindon Town in the Carling Cup, just days after Mart Poom had scored for Sunderland.

With only 15 minutes left Ian Harte pulled one back and in the dying seconds Paul Robinson decided to join the attack. With a great glancing header, Robinson equalised for the home side and took the game into extra-time.

He then saved a crucial spot kick in the penalty shoot-out with the score at 3-3. Leeds scored with their next kick and the game was won thanks to Robinson's Man of the Match performance.
